Ohio BMV Points List

How many points can I get on my Ohio Driver’s License before the BMV suspends my license?

  • The BMV will suspend your license after you get 12 points on your driver’s record within a two year period.
    • The points will be removed after two years from the initial conviction of your traffic offense.
      • For example, say you are pulled over on Feb. 15, 2021 for speeding. You have a trial and are found guilty on March 10, 2021. In this case, the points you received for this conviction will fall off your driver’s record on March 10, 2023.
  • You may take a BMV approved remedial driver’s class that will add an additional 2 points to the max. For example, once you take the class, you will have to get to 14 points on your license before the BMV will suspend your license.

Why do points on my Ohio driver’s license matter?

  • They matter for several reasons
    • As we talked about before, if you reach 12 points, the BMV will suspend your license.
    • Insurance companies monitor these points and can raise your insurance rates if you have too many points.
    • Lastly, courts and prosecutors have access to your driver’s record. Thus, if you get a moving violation in the future, they might be less likely to offer you a plea bargain if you have a multiple traffic offenses on your record.
  • An attorney can potentially help reduce these charges to non-moving violations. These types of charges, like having a headlight out, come with no points on your driver’s record. This helps with insurance, the Ohio BMV, and with potential future traffic violations.

How can I tell how many points I have on my Ohio driver’s license?

  • You can request your driver’s record with the Ohio BMV. You can do this online so you don’t have to wait in long lines at the BMV. Just go to BMV.OHIO.GOV and click on their online services. This will give you an option to pull up your driver’s record online.
